Influencer marketing: fit beats followers

A creator with a huge following and the wrong audience is an expensive post. How to choose influencers for relevance and credibility — and brief them properly.

Influencer marketing works because people trust people more than they trust brands. It fails when brands forget that — and pick creators by follower count alone.

Why big numbers mislead

A large following tells you how many people could see a post. It says nothing about whether those people care about your category, live where you sell, or trust that creator's recommendations.

A smaller creator with a focused, engaged audience will often do more for a business than a big name with a broad one.

What to look for instead

  • Audience fit. Do the creator's followers match your customers — age, location, interests?
  • Credibility. Would this person genuinely use your product? Audiences can tell when they wouldn't.
  • Engagement quality. Real comments and conversations matter more than raw like counts.
  • Content style. Does their content feel compatible with your brand, without you having to rewrite them?

Brief them like partners

The best collaborations give creators a clear objective, the key message and the non-negotiables — then leave room for their own voice. Over-scripted posts sound like ads, and audiences scroll past ads.

Measure what matters

Decide upfront what success looks like: reach in the right audience, traffic, sign-ups or sales. Then review honestly what worked, so the next campaign is sharper than the last.

The SLAP version

Stop chasing follower counts. Look for fit and credibility. Attack with clear briefs and real collaborations. Progress by measuring results, not vanity metrics.
